What does it mean... in Korean

To help K-pop newbies we decided to draw up a glossary that can help you better understand some terms used in the world of K-pop!

Let’s start with the first part!


Oppa/Hyung/Unnie/Noona (오빠/형/언니/누나)

They are suffixes dedicated to people older than us, even just one day but to be used of require a certain type of confidence. Don’t go around calling Oppa every Asian guy you meet please!


If you turn to someone older and identify yourself as a girl the terms to use are:


Oppa for boys and Unnie for girls

If you turn to someone older and identify yourself as a guy the terms to use are:

Hyung for boys and Noona for girls.


Hallyu (한류)

It can be translated as "Korean fever" or "Korean wave" and the term by which it is indicated the popularity that Korean culture is having in the world through the kpop.


Aegyo (애교)

For those familiar with the world of anime and manga it could be a synonym of "Kawaii" or something cute or tremendously sweet. It is in fact that cute, sweet or almost childish attitude that actors or idols assume towards fans. It’s usually all those hearts made with arms or fingers, those cute grimaces or kitten moves.


Bias

It is the term by which fans indicate the favorite member of a group.

Example: My Bias is Xiumin in EXO


Bias wrecker

It is the term with which you identify that member of the group that often makes you waver and almost change your mind about who your Bias really is.

Example: My EXO Bias Wreckers are Suho and Lay.


Ultimate bias

It is that idol that you prefer among all the groups in absolute, the one that reigns unchallenged in your heart of fans.

Example: For me it’s... I don’t know ... it’s impossible!
