All over the world we can find plenty and unusual dishes, which probably you’ve never heard about before.

Mok huak


Mok huak is made with tadpoles and fermented fish. This food is usually served with fermented fish sauce which is known as Pla Raa in Thai. It’s not very cheap compared to other exotic foods in Thailand, as it’s only available in the months of the rainy season. Muak Huak is mixed with lemongrass, chillies, dill, seasonings, sweet basil and herbs in a bowl. It’s then wrapped with banana leaves and grilled with charcoal. It’s usually eaten with sticky rice (khao niao)





Mod daeng


Mod daeng is the name of the weaver ants (red ants) found in northeastern Thailand. Ants are collected once a year in the dry season from February to May. Their eggs (kai mod daeng) are among the most prized edible insects for their rich, pleasant flavor and medicinal properties.

Ants and eggs can be fried, used in omelettes, or boiled in coconut milk to make a dessert called tom kati kai mod daeng.





Kai Yiew Ma


This is a fertilized duck egg that has an embryo formed inside its shell.

The fertilized embryo means that you will find yourself munching on different unmistakable textures, including bones and feathers.


This type of egg is called 'balut' in the Philippines, 'balot' in Malaysia, 'pong tea khon' in Cambodia; 'kai' in Laos, 'hot vit lon' in Vietnam and 'khai khao' in Thailand.

The duck egg is carefully stored in the incubator to maintain the right temperature to make sure the embryo will grow perfectly.




MALANG TOD


Malang tod is a Thai dish consisting of a variety of fried insects such as crickets, beetles, worms, and grasshoppers.

Crickets, worms and grasshoppers are usually eaten as a snack. While this may sound weird and unappetizing, the idea of ​​eating insects is nothing new in Thailand. Insects are a great source of protein, rich in iron and calcium. It’s common to see this kind of dishes all over Thailand. They are available in popular tourist spots and street vendors.



Goong Ten



Goong Ten is a popular dish in north-eastern Thailand. It consists of fresh raw prawns in a spicy sauce with fresh herbs. Goong Ten is a street food and is still not accepted by some people because this dish is eaten while the prawns are still alive.




Durian




The durian is called the 'world's most disgusting fruit'.It is described as a mixture of rotten onion and bad eggs and is so pungent that tourists mistake it for sewer stench. In Thailand, it is considered a delicacy. In some countries, the fruit is banned from hotels and vehicles.

CANNABIS PIZZA


Napoletana, Four Seasons, Margherita, or Marijuana... In Thailand, people passionate about pizza can now choose one more specialty, after a chain of restaurants in Bangkok launched the first ever cannabis pizza in the world.


The move was made possible by the recent amendment to the Narcotics Act, which made the use of Indian hemp in drinks and food legal. A legislative change that has created a new interesting economic market.


"And yet the cannabis on pizza has no psychoactive effect, it is free of THC, it's just a marketing campaign. At most, if you eat a lot of it, you get sleepy", admits the manager of the restaurant chain that has got the idea of ​​the new specialty.
